Prompted by some discussions with fellow trekkers this summer, I put a list of top European treks I've been on in the club newsletter. Here it is in case you want to disagree or add your tips:
10 Spain: Alpujarras Just scraping into the top 10, gentle walking along ancient trails between whitewashed villages with great bars and Spanish food.
9 Germany: Harz mountains Not an obvious choice maybe, but it’s a forested and rocky landscape with old villages, relics of the cold war border and lots of ghosts, especially on the Brocken (see Faust for more details).
8 Switzerland: Graubunden My first serious walking destination outside Britain was eastern Switzerland. Well organised of course, and an alpine experience with hills you can walk up. And cable cars. For the way back down of course.
7 Slovenia: Julian Alps Steep forested slopes and bare limestone on the summits, with not much between, beautiful lakes below and a country run with Germanic efficiency, and lots of sausage. Stay in the huts or villages, not the campsites.
6 Spain: Costa Blanca A hidden gem even though it’s near Benidorm. Big, deserted but accessible limestone peaks, cute villages and olive groves in the valleys, and that great Spanish food etc. again.
5 Norway: Dovrefjell Norway is perfect for wilderness walking, the Dovre a bit tougher and less varied than Trollheim (below), with more of a risk of having to subsist on crispbread (because of the poorly-stocked mountain huts). But there are musk oxen, and reindeer, and more and less serious hunters.
4 Switzerland: Zermatt area Why not first? You ask. Well, it is very expensive, the huts are very crowded and maybe its more for climbers than walkers. And how many photos of the Matterhorn do you need?
3 Spain: Picos de Europa Rolling heathery foothills and spectacular limestone rock peaks in the central area. I must stop going on about Spain, but the only thing wrong with the Picos is the daily 3 o’clock downpour.
2 Pyrenees: the GR10 This was my favourite organised trip in Europe, day after day of big climbs over cols from campsites in each valley, but with quite remote mountain stretches too. Look out for the bakery van to get your gourmet- style picnic in the more civilised parts.
1 Norway: Trollheim The Norwegian hut system is the perfect way to walk for days through wilderness, and in Trollheim you get great variety in between them, with a choice of mountain top traverses, flower-decked moorland and forest.
