During the week prior to our visit the weather forecasters indicated snow, winds, and sub zero temperatures - they were not wrong.

The final drive through Shap on the M6, was indeed an experience. Snow was being blown into drifts at the side of the motorway then spilling onto the road. Fortunately everyone was driving sensibly and I arrived at the farmhouse with time and light to spare. There was a substantial amount of snow on the hills, with the prospect of more the next day.
Fourteen club members attended the meet, the last arriving at around 11pm.

The accommodation at Bonscale is of high quality, this is much appreciated by members, and is a favorite annual booking.
For 'no extra charge' there are views from the front of the house that span Ullswater and its surrounding peaks.

Saturday morning was not a dissapointment, we had snow and lots of it!
We decided to split into three groups.
The party I elected to join, were to take the lower route.
We started by  the lake's edge walking in a south westerly direction; circling High Dodd and Place Fell with a climb out of Patterdale to Boredale Hause, lots of wind blown snow and ice under foot. We then followed Boredale Beck; as we descended through the valley, the falling snow abruptly turned to rain.
By the time we reached the farmhouse only the highest hills had a covering of snow.
The second group took the route over Arthur's Pike, Lord's Seat, and Loadpot Hill. The going was tough for them, with high winds and snow - but they said it was worth the effort.
With the possibility of some ice climbing, the third group headed for the Helvellyn area. They found lots of snow - but no ice to climb.
On Saturday evening we all retired to the pub at Pooley Bridge, a welcome pint, a good measure of dinner, and chatter comparing the day's events.
Fourteen happy, and satisfied people, looking forward to Sunday's shorter walk prior to their journey home.
