Three groups set out to climb Cadair Idris from various angles on
Saturday. The group I was with walked up the northern side from the
caban and traversed the wonderfully rugged terrain between Cyfrwy and
Gau Graig. The other groups negotiated the more dramatic southern
slopes. The weather looked reasonably promising early on but soon
turned 'atmospheric' as we ascended. The tops had a heavy shroud of
mist and we were blasted with icy showers. I think all of us took
advantage of the summit shelter during the day. By late afternoon
torrential rain had set in and arriving back soaked we struggled to
find enough space to hang up our sopping wet kit. The caban is big on
character but rather low on comfort !
Some of us enjoyed excellent home cooking on Saturday evening, while
the rest of the crew partook of the hospitality offered at the George
III Hotel, Penmaenpool.
There was the usual chaos on Sunday morning as missing over trousers
were located and damp engines coaxed into life. The weather looked
hopeful as some of us donned soggy goretex and headed out to explore
Cadair's less frequented western flank. Luckily we enjoyed a dry day
with great views across surrounding hills and down to the coast. There
was even a bit of sunshine to warm our lunch stop. Cadair Idris itself
stayed firmly under its cloak all day and we wondered how many clear
days the summit actually sees.
