This meet was based at the Gloucester MC hut, which is situated on a hillside on the outskirts of Deiniolen above Llanberis
It surprises me that it is still possible to find good huts that we've never used before. This meet was based at the Gloucester MC hut, which is situated on a hillside on the outskirts of Deiniolen above Llanberis. A decent hut, inside tidy, well equipped, and cleaner than some, but the main attraction a terrace on the front from which an amazing view across Deiniolen to the Menai Strait and as far as Holyhead Mountain on the far side of Anglesey. With dry, mild weather, a good place to sit and have a drink on arrival Friday night.
On Saturday, the meet split into two groups, one climbing on the slabs at Llyn Idwal, the rest walking out from the hut onto the Elidir Fach and Elidir Fawr. The weather, a bit cloudy at times but basically a fine day. After Elidir Fawr we shared the ridge with an organised fell-running event, but further on we lost the runners by climbing up onto Foel-goch, the runners staying on the contouring path lower down. From up here, fine views taking in the ridges of both Tryfan and Crib Goch. We crossed Y Garn and dropped to Llyn y Cwn. Declining the opportunity to continue up Glyder Fawr, we instead descended on a spectacular but little-used route down Cwm Padrig to Nant Peris, from where an interesting path through the old quarry workings brought us back to Deiniolen. An excellent hillwalking day.
Saturday evening: this being the annual dinner meet, the evening started with a bottle of fizz out on the hut terrace (prospective members please note champagne not always available on meets), then a fine meal at the Peak Restaurant in Llanberis. On Sunday, rather damp and cloudy around Llanberis, but we were able to find better weather for a Sunday walk around Llangollen.
