It was to be the last camping meet of the summer and we decided to use a site on the northeastern side of Dartmoor, a couple of miles from Sticklepath.
After a summer of pretty poor weather, good to write that this meet enjoyed fine weather from start to finish. It was to be the last camping meet of the summer and we decided to use a site on the northeastern side of Dartmoor, a couple of miles from Sticklepath. Our previous camping meets on Dartmoor have tended to be based round on the west side of the Moor so this gave us the chance to see a different part of Dartmoor, with the advantage of saving half an hour on the journey.
Saturday and Sunday were both taken up with fine long walks out on the Moor. For summit collectors, the list of tors included, on Saturday, Kennon Hill, Hound Tor, Wild Tor, Hangingstone Hill, Oke Tor, Belstone Tor; and on Sunday, Bellever Tor, Longaford Tor, and Higher & Lower White Tors. On Saturday we got out as far as Cranmere Pool, where we found that some-one had removed the stamp. Sunday's route took in some slightly unspectacular hut circles. Walking on Dartmoor can be a bit dubious in wet or misty weather but on these two days, with fine weather and dry ground, the walking was excellent and even crossing a Mire on Sunday afternoon was not too much of a problem.
Food: Saturday, fine evening, pubs crowded, so we ate (and drank) on the campsite; Sunday, went for a slightly dubious curry in Okehampton. Omissions: no cream teas. Monday: not wanting to go back out onto the Moor, we picked up a route on the Two Moors Way along and/or above the River Teign where it passes for several miles through a fairly spectacular gorge, a good walk to finish the meet. |
