 New Arrangements for Membership

In the coming months STMC is planning to make significant changes to its membership arrangements.  For existing members the current system of annual renewals will be discontinued and all existing members will be offered life membership.  New members will be asked to pay a one-off joining fee of £25.  New members will also be asked to complete and sign a membership application form as at present.  After the end of 2013 the Club will no longer maintain its affiliation to the British Mountaineering Council.   Members who want to continue receiving the benefits of BMC membership (insurance, discounts, Summit etc) will be able to join BMC as individual members.

Club activities will continue as at present: meets at roughly one per month, local walks, London socials and Xmas meals, and the main means of communication will be the E-News.

At the moment we have not been through this website to reflect these changes, so please be aware that in future the club will operate as described here.

We had all seen the weather reports and the pictures of Carlisle under water...

Bonscale Farmhouse, Ullswater

January 14 – 16, 2005

By Mim Chapman

We had all seen the weather reports and the pictures of Carlisle under water but, desperate to walk off some mince pies, there was a large group  waiting on Ian’s word that we could go ahead with the meet.

Finally, Friday morning, we decided to go.  We didn’t know if there would be any electricity or roads still flooded but we were undeterred.

Bonscale is a large holiday house ( rather than bunkhouse).  So many people booked  onto the meet we also had another house half a mile down the road.  With both houses sitting right on the

banks of Ullswater we could all see the damage from the storms:  trees sawn up and pushed to the side of the road and flood damage everywhere.  There had been  no  electricity for  a week but the  log fires soon took away the chill  and the alcohol  and humour  warmed our insides!

On Saturday morning most of us decided to  walk a circular route to Patterdale along the scenic Ullswater banks. A good choice for a day with low cloud and fortunately the rain held off.

Everyone was in  the party mood in the evening celebrating Ian Stuart’s 50th birthday.  We had an excellent meal in Pooley Bridge followed by wine, port, some other fairly dubious-looking beverages and, of course, balloons and cake - (still haven’t walked off the mince pies !)

Any more birthdays  coming up ?
