Welcome to the Website of the Southern Trekking and Mountaineering Club. This site is intended to provide information both for current members of the Club, and for people who may be thinking about joining a mountaineering or hillwalking club.
STMC is a London-based mountaineering club, drawing its membership from London and the home counties. The Club was founded more than 25 years ago by a group of keen hillwalkers and climbers who saw a need for a London-area club that was perhaps a little less technical than the established mountaineering and climbing clubs. Ever since, it has drawn its members from a wide area around London, and has tended to attract people who are keen on hillwalking and trekking rather than pure technical rock climbers. New members have ranged from people who are already experienced hillwalkers to comparative novices.
Our main activities are weekend meets which take place every two to three weeks in areas with hillwalking and/or climbing interest. The areas most frequently visited are North Wales and the Lake District, where extensive opportunities exist for all grades of hillwalking, scrambling and climbing, but we also visit a wide range of other areas, including the Peak District for walking and gritstone climbing, plus South and Mid Wales, the Welsh Borders, the Southwest (Dartmoor, Exmoor, Dorset) and Yorkshire where the emphasis is mainly on hillwalking. We arrange week-long trips to the Scottish Highlands in February and May of each year. Although the Club does not organise trips outside the UK, groups of members often get together to organise visits to the Alps, etc.
We usually use cheap hut/bunkhouse accommodation, with some camping in summer. Travel is arranged in members' cars, sharing car costs. We travel to the meets after work on Friday evening, returning Sunday evening. More information about our meets can be found on the Meets List and FAQ.
The Club covers a wide range of abilities. Some years a few of the fittest members may attempt the Welsh 3000's (fifteen 3000ft peaks in one day) but there are plenty of members who find just one of these peaks a good day's outing. Obviously a certain minimum level of fitness is necessary, but if you can manage 12 miles comfortably you should have no problems. The more experienced members are always willing to give whatever help and information they can. However it must be understood that STMC does not provide leadership or professional guiding or instruction. The majority of members are walkers only, but we have an active minority who go rock-climbing on meets and also midweek at climbing walls in London.
For prospective members who have no experience of hillwalking we provide an Equipment List as, although hillwalking need not be an expensive hobby you do need to make sure you can stay warm and dry. We also have some notes on Safety. Sporadically some club members put pen to paper and produce a short report about a meet. These are published in the newsletter as they are submitted and some are reproduced on this site in Meet Reports - these will give you an idea of what happens on the meets.
On the second Tuesday each month (except December) we meet at 8.00pm in London for a drink and sometimes a talk by a club member or occasionally by a professional mountaineer.  Other social events are organised from time to time, including Sunday walks in areas close to London. These Sunday walks have turned out to be very popular in recent months so we are trying now to organise them reasonably often. Non-members are welcome and find them a pleasant introduction to the Club. See Socials and Forthcoming Events for more info.
More information about Membership is given under FAQ - Membership. We do ask that you join the club before you attend a meet. Once in the Club you will receive the Club E-News e-mail approximately once every two months. You can start attending meets straightaway. Each meet has an assigned Meet Secretary who organizes the logistics of the weekend. Details of how to get onto meets is given under New/Special Information/Meet Booking Information.
Finally, if you would like to talk with a few of our members and find out more about the Club before deciding whether or not to join, you are very welcome to meet us for a drink in London or on one of our Sunday local walks.
